Positions available for the SCSL Student Law Society

The Student Law Society will be an integral part of the Law School as we develop and grow, and is an association that will contribute to the law student experience while at SCSL. The Society and its officers will be responsible for organising social events, competition and skills based events like mooting, managing professional development opportunities for students and much more. Please see below the various positions that are available.

1. President – The President has oversight of the Society’s activities and functions and liaises with all appointments of the Society to ensure that the activities and functions of the Society are implemented effectively and efficiently. The President in due course will also attend as a representative of SCSL to Young Lawyers meetings.
2. Secretary – The Secretary will organise all meetings and maintain record of the Society’s discussion and proceedings in the meetings. The Secretary will also provide support to the President in relation to any administrative matters.
3. Vice President (Treasury and Sponsorship) – The Vice President of Treasury and Sponsorship will maintain the Society’s finances, monitor spending and investigate and implement funding proposals and sponsorship to fund the Society’s activities. The Vice President will deputise for the President as necessary. The Vice President will also make regular and timely financial reports, be open to audit and to liaise carefully with the Assistant Principal (Internal Operation) or their delegate in the Accounts Team.
4. Education and Careers Director – The Education and Careers Director will have the responsibility of planning and organising education and career related events. They will also assist the Internships/Placement Officer to manage the Internship Program and other career development initiatives that are developed by the Institute.
5. Competitions Director – The Competitions Director will work with the Dean of Law to establish SCSL mooting and advocacy competitions. As SCSL grows, the Competitions Director will encourage students to take part in national level mooting and advocacy competitions against other Law Schools. The Competitions director ideally will be passionate about mooting and would display proficient advocacy skills.
6. Social Events & Community Engagement Director – SCSL is passionate about its location within the Australian Technology Park and the Redfern community. It is important for our law students to make positive contributions to our community. The Social Events and Community Engagement Director will assist in organising initiatives within the community, organising social events for students alongside the Student Services Team and working with the Faculty Manager to organise volunteering programs within the community.
7. Communications and Publications Director – The Communications and Publications Director will be responsible for circulating among the law students and faculty all reports and newsletters on the activities of the Society.
8. Student Representatives – Student Representatives from each intake are encouraged to be active members of the Society.
9. IT Officer - The IT Officer will manage the SCSL Law Society Moodle page and will liaise with the Institute’s IT Department and Graphic Designer in managing and maintaining the webpage and associated materials. The IT Officer is to have a solid background in IT.
