The main institutions of law and government are addressed: parliament, the executive, the courts and the legal profession. There is a focus on the Australian Constitution; the history and structure of the federation; the constitutions of the States; legislatures and the legislative process; the development of Australian sovereignty and the prospects for constitutional reform. The unit also introduces students to the Common Law tradition and legal reasoning with a focus on the doctrine of precedent and the principles and rules of statutory interpretation. *EFTSL = Equivalent full-time study load
