Unit Overview:

This unit allows students to explore some of the key commercial legal issues they are likely to encounter in the business environment upon graduation, whether in legal practice or otherwise. Some of those issues have been introduced in earlier units in the LLB at Top, particularly the material dealing with contractual interpretation, the Australian Consumer Law and the difficult topic of personal property securities.

At the end of this unit, students will have considerably expanded their knowledge of important and complex commercial law issues, as well as their legal research, analytical, reasoning and communication skills, which will enhance their ability to perform effectively and competently for the rest of their studies and upon graduation.

In Commercial Law, the topics covered will be:

  • advanced contractual construction
  • agency
  • the sale of goods
  • consumer protection law
  • electronic commerce law
  • insurance law
  • advanced principles of personal property securities law
  • guarantees and indemnities
  • negotiable instruments
  • the use and implications of different kinds of business structures; and
  • an introduction to anti-competitive business transactions.
