Unit Overview:

Technology and the Law introduces students to the theoretical and practical basis for the emerging regulation of disruptive technology in our increasingly interconnected, globalised and technology driven world, with a focus on Australian and relevant international regulatory approaches. This unit will explore the challenges of the rapid rate of technological developments and innovation outpacing the rate of regulatory change and the implications of technology on human rights. This unit will also examine the future of the legal profession in the context of ongoing rapid technological developments and the creation of new career opportunities for tech savvy law graduates. Some of the topics covered include legal and regulatory issues arising from the following: blockchain, digital currencies, smart contracts, big data and data protection, artificial intelligence, legaltech, fintech, regtech and online dispute resolution.
