Visit from Dr Peter Macmillan

The Sydney City School of Law was pleased and honoured to welcome a visit from Dr Peter Macmillan, pictured here with Top Principal, Dr Minshen Zhu and Dean Clark.

Peter is a former student of Dean Clark's when Clark was an academic at the University of Tasmania Law School. Peter has had a long career as an expert on competition law. His PhD work involved an empirical study identified and measured ways in which legal specialists with different levels of expertise (but the same technical legal knowledge) think differently when assessing legal risk in information-limited and time-constrained contexts. His results reveal a number of readily identifiable and measurable differences between how more and less expert participants assess legal risk in their common area of legal specialisation, and by other legal service providers, and lead to new pedagogical approaches to the design and delivery of post-graduate, mid-career courses offered by law schools. They also provide a new foundation for scholarly research into the cognitive development of specialist legal expertise, which to date has not distinguished between the four levels of proficiency identified in Dr Macmillan's thesis.

Peter's work is of special interest and relevance to the Sydney City School of Law as we strive continually to improve our design and delivery of excellent legal education.
